Artopia was pretty sweet this year!
Â
It’s the annual art/food/fashion party put on by Westword held at Club Vinyl and 2AM… It’s also where they officially announced the winners of the Masterminds awards. The winners were published in this weeks issue of the periodical alongside our 4 page spread. We didn’t win for the visual arts category as we had hoped, but the winners, RiNo were definitely more deserving of the honor than we were… That doesn’t mean we won’t be after it next year, so we’ll be asking for everyone’s support again in the future. Back to the event.

Tickets were $25 presale and $35 at the door, but it was way worth it for all of the festivities going on inside! Free food from a handfull of local establishments and samples of different liquid refreshments kept our tastebuds exited.  Matt even found a booth with a pyramid of assorted flavors of donuts, he claims they had bbq flavored donuts too! I put my name in a raffle for a funky flower arrangement from Moon Doggie Gardens and I won!! My mom became the proud recipient of the bouquet…

Art exhibits from the Photo Martini Club, Matt Doubek, and Amanda Marie massaged our retnas.

The music was bumpin on all 4 levels, and our friends, Hearts of Palm (an 8-piece band formerly known as Nathan & Stephen) jammed out in the lower level.. The Unity fashion show on the roof was ultra hot, the models and the gear, props. Indy Ink flashed some gear on the runway too…

Halfway into the night, the party made the move from Vinyl to 2AM, half a block up on Broadway where there was even more craziness going on… The line getting into 2AM was long but it moved fast and the mural that decorated the normally tagged up construction barrier was a refreshing distraction. A whole lot of dope Denver artists got down on it, including Mike Graves and MOEH. Once inside, there were major art installations from our friends Dunn the Street Sign Artist and the crew from Your Name in Graffiti. Performances reminiscent of a circus with a guy juggling while balancing on a yoga ball and ladies doing amazing acrobatics while suspended overhead from the support beams blew our minds! Down in the lower level we enjoyed the slam poetry of our friends, Lucifury and Lady Speech with other members of the Slam Nuba team and PodSlam.org crew, they were so intense with their verbal delivery… A burlesque show, a film projected on a translucent curtain and a mini art gallery rounded everything out pretty nicely. The promotional reps from the Smoker Friendly booth were like vultures all night, they were literally throwing cigarettes at people by closing time!

Overall it was a very fun night, we saw plenty of friends that read the Westword article and congratulated us. For the most part we still remained anonymous which was awesome, we didn’t know what to expect, so aside from our names people still don’t know who we are!! The Mafia is not about us, it’s about the art and the community… On another note, we love Ray Young Chu!!!
