this weekend…

it’s that time again, the time when a majority of the galleries around town show their newly hung work…  this month is going to be pretty intense!  many of our friends are showing around town this thursday through saturday.  we’ll be posting plenty of information over the next few days.

first off, audrey macnamara will be having a solo show at the meadowlark bar, thursday night.

on friday, there will be a big group showing at space gallery called molten.  four of our friends will be part of this show; alicia bailey, rafa jenn, katie taft, and jason thielke.  it should be pretty hot…

andenken gallery will also be opening to show called merge.  featuring artwork by vince comparetto, amanda marie, and our homie scot lefavor.

we’ve been kicking it with scot a lot lately while he’s been wrapping up his portion of andenken’s triple-whammy art show.  here’s a couple shots of scot in action.

go scot!  watching him make his art is a trip, the steps to produce his work are lenghthy and tedious, and the require major patience…  one would never imagine just how much time he puts into each piece.   we witnessed this series from start to finish more-or-less, what he does is crazy, he’s crazy, and anyone that isn’t at this show on friday is crazy….

more event posts tomorrow-

design after dark/ish

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Our friend, Kyle Carpenter, was delegated the task of turning an interesting concept into a physical object recently…  I work with Kyle, so i see what he’s up to everyday.  Kyle and our boss, Jim, were contacted by Craig Rouse of R Design to produce an object for the The Design Coucil’s 4th annual Design After Dark party/fundraiser.  ‘ISH’ was the title of the event, the idea was to gather a group of denver’s finest designers and artists together to make objects based on a randomly selected word (ending in ‘ish’) and a randomly selected object.  The word they picked was ‘impoverish’ and the object was a one-of-a-kind sofa designed by Gaetano Pesce, called Tramonto a New York (New York Sunset).  Pretty crazy lookin piece of furniture!  Pesce has a lot of sweet work…

The final concept for the ‘ISH’ object was done by Craig before he handed it over to Kyle and Jim to produce.  The final masterpiece, titled ‘An Island of Two Worlds’, was shown last friday at the EXDO event center where it was placed in a silent auction alongside 40+ other masterpieces.  Another piece was submitted by our good friend, Jason Thielke, it sounds like he made a sick lantern-style light box that we have yet to see…  Photos anyone?

An Island of Two Worlds

Here it is!  One half is a city made of many different materials, clean and polished. The 25 pillars are all made of different materials, symbolizing buildings and the sheer amount of things one could experience in New York.
An Island of Two Worlds
On the other side is a reflection of the same city, it’s very dark, with seemingly countless years of depression and decay, “a place where no man would want to call home,” Kyle stated.  I’m sure that many people living in NY could relate to this piece, the parallelism of having two worlds is one place is pretty uncanny, only now am I realizing how strongly their message got translated…

The final bid on ‘An Island of Two Worlds’ was $800!  Good job team!  I know Kyle was proud…  Matt and I would have loved to see all of the pieces in person, rubbed elbows with people while listening to dj’s wyatt earp and dj foxx (we love house music), but $85 a head is a little out of our budget.  Kyle would have hooked us up if he could have, maybe next year we’ll muscle our way in the door!  Photos taken by Kyle Carpenter.
